David Crosby – Seattle : March 15 2016

What an incredible night. I have always been a Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young fan, and have seen them in their various iterations a half dozen times over the years, but this was the first time seeing David Crosby solo. It was just him, his guitar, his music and his stories. As usual, I wanted to get a good seat close to the stage and as this was a general admission show with only limited reserved seating, I decided to be one of those folks who got a reserved seat…I hate waiting in line and rushing in for the best seat. I bought the VIP, reserved ticket through David Crosby’s web site and relatively speaking, it was fairly inexpensive. When I showed up at the venue, little did I know that I was the ONLY one who had a reserved seat. The person at the ticket booth said “oh, Mr. Ashley, we have been waiting for you, go stand over there and someone will be right with you”. I was promptly met by the venue manager, who let me in the door about 20 minutes before the venue opened and while all of the GA folks were lined up around the corner and down the street in the cold…I have to tell you I felt pretty special. It didn’t end there….The manager, gave me a breif tour of the facility, showing me where the bar was, the merchandise, the restrooms and took me to my seat, which happened to be in the front row center, and it had a sign on it saying “Reserved for Bryon A.”. I went to the merchandise counter to collect my VIP swag, and the merch guy also said, “Oh, Bryon… I have been waiting for you”, and thanked me profusely for being such a big fan. I have been to a lot of shows and have upgraded to the VIP experience, but this was truly the only one where I actually felt like a real VIP.

This was the first time I have been to the Neptune Theater in Seattle and was a bit apprehensive that it was going to be small, dingy and have poor sound. I was very pleasantly surprised when I walked in. It was “vintage” and had a great rustic look and feel. It was very well decorated with the Neptune theme, with stained glass, statues and reliefs on the walls.

David Crosby came on promptly at 8:00pm. He played a great set of songs spanning his career from the Byrds, through all of the versions CSNY, and even a Joni Mitchell song “For Free”. What was great about this show was that before each song he would tell a short story about where he was in his life and what each song meant to him, whether it was his loves of his life in “Guinnever”, the heavy heart he had following the death of his girlfriend at the time of making “Deja Vu” to how he was kicked out of the Byrds by writing the song”Triad”. He also (obviously) had a lot to say about politics, and of course did not care much for the current state of the government or the presidential prospects.

Although, the harmonies of CSN will never be beaten, he is truly the backbone of those harmonies and has a beautiful voice which is still as good today as it was 40 years ago. His guitar style is also so unique in the multitude of tunings and chord structure…something only I can dream of being able to emulate.

This show will go down as one of my favorites not only for the performance, but also the experience at the Neptune Theater.

Queensryche / Scorpions – Las Vegas NV : October 7 2015

We flew down to Las Vegas mid week to celebrate Toni’s Birthday by seeing two of her favorite bands Queensryche and The Scorpions. Toni has seen the Scorpions in the 80’s in their hay day, but I had never seen them before, and neither one of us had seen Quensryche before. We were actually a little apprehensive with Queensryche as Jeoff Tate and and Chris DeGarmo are no longer in the band and there has been so much turmoil in the band over recent years, but these guys absolutely ROCKED!. I was very impressed with their sound and lead singer Todd La Torre was spot on in my opinion. They played a great set with great hits such as Silent Lucidity, Queen of the Reich, Empire and Jet City Woman. Very impressed with the sound and performance.

The Scorpions came on the stage a little after 9:00pm. The guys had great energy and were everything I expected and more. Rudolf Schenker on rhythm guitar, Matthias Jabs lead guitar and lead vocals Klaus Meine were just phenomenal. They played a great set with many old favorites such as The Zoo , Coast to Coast , Always Somewhere, Wind of Change , Rock ‘n’ Roll Band, Dynamite, Blackout, No One Like You and Big City Nights. Drummer James Kottak did an incredible drum solo on his elevating drum set while playing Kottak Attack

The Encore songs of the show were, Still Loving You and Rock You Like a Hurricane brought down the house…absolutely amazing.

Going to see them in Seattle on Friday!

Neil Young – Seattle WA : October 4 2015

Toni and I have been wanting to see Neil Young for years. We had seen him when he performed with Crosby, Stills and Nash, but we had never seen him perform his solo material, which both of us really enjoy. We were very excited to go to the WaMu theater in Seattle to see him, and had great seats in the front row right behind the general admission section.

We got there and realized that our seats were right behind GA, which was standing room, which meant that we had people standing in front of us the whole night…we didn’t mind it that much, but the people around us were really up tight about it. The two ladies behind us would;t stop talking about how everyone was being so rude and standing in their way…the guy along side of os actually starting telling people to get out of his way….Just a bad vibe around there, so bad we decided to move back 27 rows to our “other seats”.. The crowd there were much more relaxed and what you would expect from a Neil Young show.

We really enjoyed his performance and especially when he performed his old stuff, opening the show with After The Gold Rush, Heart Of Gold, Comes A Time and Old Man. My favorite of the night was Down By The River.

Rod Stewart – Las Vegas NV : August 15 2015

What a great show tonight with Rod Stewart at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace. Toni and I had seen Rod Stewart before, so we looking forward to another great performance and stage show and we weren’t disappointed at all. He had a full band including all the ladies playing the horns and strings. The setlist was incredible including early songs such as I’m Losing You and Maggie May. I think one of my favorites of the night was Your in My Heart.

Rod did all of his regular show antics with kicking soccer balls into the crowd, walking through the crowd while singing and ending with a huge balloon drop during the final song Do You Think I’m Sexy.

Fun night in Vegas!

RUSH – Seattle WA : July 19 2015

A great show last night at the Key Arena in Seattle. As usual, Rush put on an absolutely incredible show. They opened up at about 7:45pm with The Anarchist and played until nearly 11:00pm, ending with Working Man. In between they played songs spanning their 40 years of making great music including Far Cry, Roll the Bones, Subdivisions, Tom Sawyer, The Spirit of Radio, Closer to the Heart, Anthem, Xanadu and 2112 parts I, II, IV and VII.
